Wildlife - nature, fauna, flora | New Zealand
New Zealand is a realm of intact nature. The original virginal rainforests, mysterious non-flying Kiwi birds, seals, dolphins, penguins, sea gannets, albatrosses, whales, the mountainous Kea parrots… Regrettably, the expansiveness of human civilisation has brought many of these species to the brink of extinction. Today, you can see some of them in small ZOOs; if you are lucky, you can spot several of them in the wild during travels but you will get the highest degree of certainty if you visit some of the protected areas where you can observe many species in their natural habitats and often in high numbers.
Trips involving the observation of many species of birds and sea mammals are ensured by specialised companies with the appropriate licence. Most often only a very limited number of interested persons are permitted to enter the areas or participate in the trip and therefore it is necessary to book this in time.
Some of the possible options:
- Observing whales
- Observing the Kiwi birds in the wild, rare Takahe, Kaka parrots, New Zealand pigeons and other indigenous bird species
- A trip to a unique sand tongue, involving the observation of wading birds or gannets
- Observing Royal Albatrosses
- Swimming with dolphins and seals or observing them
- Ride on a kayak to the nesting place of white herons
- Observing penguins
Of course, one can find freely accessible places where some of the indigenous species can be observed directly. We will gladly take you to such places and we will provide for this in your itinerary. You only have to be aware that it is necessary to reserve more free time for visiting them and that you also need to have luck on your side – the animals are not always ready to pose for you right during your visit…
