Caves

The dark realm of New Zealand caves can be explored in many ways. In a pleasant and undemanding manner on foot and/or on a boat; or adventurously when you swim on a rubber ring on an underground water stream (black water rafting) and/or descend on a rope into deep precipices… There are opportunities for activities of this kind in the cave systems in variously well-known and interesting localities, which you can find in the central part of the North Island, on the western coast of the South Island or in the area of the Fiordland NP.
The caves are usually karst limestone caves, extending dozens of miles underground. The progressive erosion has created a mysterious world, which includes luminescent larvae of an insect called Titiwai (which translates as "mirroring in water") with a Latin name Arachnocampa Luminosa. These larvae, referred to as "fireflies" by us can also be seen in many other places of New Zealand.
What can be in store for you:
An undemanding one-hour stroll and cruise through the underground labyrinth of caves is for everyone.
If you are seeking adventure and you are in a good physical condition, you can trustingly choose caving and black water rafting. Your safety is a priority. Before the descent, you will be trained in climbing techniques and you will be provided with all the necessary gear. Groups are small so that your guide can take care of your safety and can share his extensive knowledge of the caves with you. You will rope down like spiders into a bottomless precipice; then you will glide in an inflated tire-tube on the surface of an underground water stream under the luminescent ceiling of caves, through narrow passes, across waterfalls along which you will get back to daylight. This trip will play with all your senses and will raise the level of adrenaline in your blood in such a way that you will be unable to forget this experience for a long time.
Based on the mentioned examples, we will include specific activities for you according to your wish, which are offered for the area concerned, in your itinerary and we will ensure appropriate booking. We will gladly consult the suitability of the chosen activity with you.
